How to Remove or Uninstall 3rd Party Transformation Packs in Windows?

8:20:00 am |

If you are a Windows user and love customizing Windows look-n-feel, you must be aware of 3rd partytransformation packs (aka customization packs or skin packs). Transformation packs are basically a collection of Windows themes, software skins, mouse cursors, sound schemes, login screen, boot screen, 3rd party customization software, etc.
Most of the times transformation packs are created to transform existing Windows look into another OS look such as converting Windows XP look into Windows 7 or Windows 8, converting Windows look into Linux or Mac OS, and so on.
Transformation packs are not released officially by Microsoft, these are created by 3rd party theme developers. Although theme developers take all kind of precautions while developing transformation packs but sometimes you might face problems while installing or using these transformation packs. Many times Windows doesn't boot after installing a transformation pack or sometimes you don't like the final look of Windows after applying the pack.
In all these cases, you might want to uninstall and remove the transformation pack from Windows to get the previous default look back but most of the people don't know how to uninstall these transformation packs.
Today in this tutorial, we are going to tell you how to get rid of these 3rd party transformation packs from Windows? Using the simple methods given in this guide, you'll be able to remove these packs from Windows OS.
We have divided this tutorial in following 5 parts:
  • METHOD 1: Using System Restore
  • METHOD 2: Using Transformation Pack's Uninstaller
  • METHOD 3: Manually Restoring Everything Back
  • METHOD 4: Using Sfc/ Scannow Command
  • METHOD 5: Using Windows Setup Disc
So without wasting time, lets start the tutorial:
METHOD 1: Using System Restore
We always advise everyone to create a System Restore point before installing any transformation pack so that you can restore your system back to previous working state if you don't like the new Windows look or if you face some problem while using Windows.
Most of the transformation packs automatically create System Restore point before modifying system files and installing stuff but its always a wise idea to manually create a System Restore point before installing these packs and don't depend upon these packs.
So if you want to uninstall a transformation pack and want to remove it from your Windows, just use Windows built-in System Restore tool and restore your system to a previous state to get the default look back.
To learn how to use System Restore program in Windows, check out first point "Always create System Restore Point" in following tutorial:
METHOD 2: Using Transformation Pack's Uninstaller
If you didn't create a System Restore point and the transformation pack also didn't create it, then first method is not for you.
Don't worry! You have other options left. Almost all transformation packs come with an uninstaller which helps you in uninstalling the pack from your system.
You can find the uninstall option to remove the transformation pack in "Add/Remove Programs" (Windows XP and previous OS) or "Programs and Features" (Windows Vista and later OS) under Control Panel.
If you can't find the uninstall option in Control Panel, check out transformation pack's entry in "All Programs" list in Start Menu. It should contain the uninstall option.
If you don't see transformation pack entry in Start Menu, check out the setup folder which contains transformation pack installer, it might also contain the uninstaller if the developer provided.
METHOD 3: Manually Restoring Everything Back
If the transformation pack didn't come with an uninstaller, you can restore Windows look manually using following simple steps:
1. First apply default Windows theme using Desktop Properties. It'll immediately provide the default UI back in your Windows.
2. Now uninstall all 3rd party software installed by transformation pack. You can uninstall them from Control Panel as mentioned in Method 2.
3. Then apply default cursors, sound schemes, etc using Desktop Properties or Control Panel.
4. Transformation packs also modify login screen, boot screen, etc to change Windows UI. To modify these things, transformation packs edit lots of system files such as DLL, EXE, CPL, etc using Resource Hacker tool. If you know which system files are generally modified by these transformation packs, you can restore those system files using Windows setup disc or by copying those files from another computer.
And once you know about the files, you can restore them back by extracting the default system files from Windows setup as mentioned in following tutorial:

METHOD 4: Using Sfc/ Scannow Command
If the above mentioned manual method is too hard and complicated for you, you can try a simple command to restore all default system files easily, quickly and automatically.
Windows comes with a built-in tool "System File Checker" to check the integrity of all protected system files. It scans your system to find system files which are corrupt or have been modified and automatically restores default system files if required.
To run this tool, you just need to follow these simple steps:
1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator as mentioned here and run following command:
sfc /scannow
 Using_Sfc_Scannow_Command_in_Windows.png
2. It'll take a few minutes in scanning your system and will automatically restore corrupt or modified system files. It might ask you to insert Windows setup disc, so keep the disc ready with you.
3. Once the process completes, you'll need to restart your system and then you'll get the default Windows look back.
METHOD 5: Using Windows Setup Disc
If everything fails and none of the above mentioned method works for you, then you'll need to follow the ultimate solution i.e. repair Windows using setup disc.
Boot using Windows setup disc and then you can repair Windows to restore all default files and settings. It'll keep all your personal documents and software installed in your system, so don't worry about them.

Fix “Your Purchase Couldn’t Be Completed” Error Message, When You Try to Download Apps from Windows 8 Store

8:17:00 am |

Problem Symptom:

Whenever you try to purchase or download any app from Windows 8 Store, you get "Your purchase couldn't be completed" error message. No extra help or links are given to fix the problem. You just get an error message with 2 buttons "Try again" and "Cancel" as shown in following screenshot:

Reason:
The reason behind this problem is a built-in service which is called "Windows Update". If this service is not running in background and if the service is set to disabled in Windows 8, you'll always get this strange errormessage while downloading any app from Windows 8 Store.
Solution:
Solution is very simple. You just need to re-enable "Windows Update" service and your problem will be fixed. Simply follow these simple steps to fix the problem:
1. Press Win+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box. Type services.msc in the textbox and press Enter. It'll open Services Manager.
2. Scroll down to bottom and you'll see a service "Windows Update" in the list. Double-click on it and set itsStartup type to Automatic.

3. That's it. Close services manager window and now you'll not face any problem while downloading any app from Windows 8 Store.
I don't see any reason behind disabling "Windows Update" service in Windows 8 as its an important service which helps in protecting your Windows by installing latest security and other updates released by Microsoft. If someone is using a pirated Windows 8 OS, there are chances that the user disabled the service to prevent Windows from installing updates which automatically detects pirated Windows in computers. It might also possible that some users disable the service accidentally which is rare though...

Easy Ways to Switch from Windows 8 to Other Installed OS in Dual Boot Environment

8:14:00 am |

We have mentioned in many articles that Microsoft's new OS Windows 8 comes with a new redesigned boot loader (aka boot manager or boot menu screen). Its different from the classic boot loader present in previous Windows versions such as Windows XP or Windows 7. Windows 8 boot loader comes with a new GUI to switch between OS, to customize boot options, to access safe mode and other advanced settings.

But there is one problem in this new boot loader. In previous Windows versions, the boot loader was used to show immediately right after the default BIOS screen so that users can select the OS to use. But in Windows 8, the new boot loader is shown after the boot screen when Windows 8 booting process is finished. It increases the waiting time if you don't want to boot into Windows 8 but want to use the other OS installed in your computer system. In such scenario, you'll need to first wait for Windows 8 to finish the boot process and when it shows the boot loader, then you'll be able to select the other installed OS. Once you select the other OS, Windows 8 will restart your computer again and upon reboot, you'll be able to boot into other installed OS.

This behavior might become very frustrating if you frequently switch between Windows 8 and other installed Windows versions. Today in this article, we are going to share a few easy and quick ways which will help you in switching between Windows 8 and other installed OS quickly and easily if you have a dual boot computer system.

So without wasting time, lets start the tutorial:

Method 1: Disable New Boot Loader in Windows 8

If you find the new boot loader problematic, you can disable it permanently. Once you disable it, you'll get Windows Vista or Windows 7 style classic boot loader which will be shown right after the BIOS screen and you'll be able to select desired OS to use without first booting into Windows 8.

Following tutorial will help you in disabling the new boot loader in Windows 8:

How to Disable New Boot Loader and Bring Back Windows 7 Style Boot Loader in Windows 8?

Method 2: Use Advanced Startup Options to Quickly Switch to Other OS in Windows 8

Did you know Windows 8 comes with a new advanced startup feature which helps you in quickly accessing boot options such as use another installed OS, etc? We have already told you about this feature in following topic:

How to Access and Use Windows 8 Metro Boot Loader and Advanced Boot Options?

If you are currently logged in Windows 8 and want to switch to other installed OS, with the help of this feature you'll not need to boot into Windows 8 again to select the other OS. You can directly restart your system into other OS.

1. Move your mouse cursor to top-right corner of screen to access Charms Bar. Alternatively, you can access it by pressing Win+C keys together.

2. Now click on Settings and then click on "Change PC settings" option.

3. It'll open PC setting screen. Now click on General tab and in right-side section scroll down to bottom and click on "Restart now" button given in Advanced startup section.

4. That's it. It'll take a few seconds and will show you a new screen containing various boot options. Click on "Use another operating system" option and then you'll be able to select the other installed OS to use.
Windows_8_Boot_Options_Menu.png
As soon as you click on the other OS entry, your computer will restart and upon reboot it'll directly boot into other OS instead of booting into Windows 8.
Method 3: Another Quick Way to Use Advanced Startup Screen to Switch to Other OS
If you don't want to go to PC settings screen to access advanced startup feature, you can directly access it using following way:
1. Move your mouse cursor to top-right corner of screen to access Charms Bar. Alternatively, you can access it by pressing Win+C keys together.
2. Now click on Settings and then click on Power button. It'll show boot options such as restart, shut down, hibernate, etc.
3. Now press and hold SHIFT key and click on Restart option.
http://media.askvg.com/articles/images3/Restart_Shutdown_Windows_8_PC.png
4. That's it. Similar to method 2, it'll show you a new screen having various boot options where you can click on "Use another operating system" option to restart your computer directly into other installed OS.
Method 4: Using DOS Command
Microsoft has introduced a new parameter for built-in shutdown command in Windows 8. This new parameter is /o which works in conjunction with /r parameter which is used to restart the system.
So you can execute following command in Command Prompt to access new boot options screen to select other installed OS:
shutdown.exe /r /o
Now you can select the other OS to use similar to previous methods. If you want, you can create a shortcut for this command and place it on Desktop or pin it to Taskbar or Start Screen for quick and easier access.
Method 5: Using Shortcut in Desktop Context Menu
You can also add a direct shortcut to access advanced startup screen in Desktop context menu (right-click menu). In this way, you'll only need to right-click on Desktop and then you can click on the option to access boot options screen.

Popular File Recovery Techniques and Related Software

9:40:00 pm |

Nowadays we store all our personal information, photographs, letters, videos and audios in digital format, meaning we store them in hard drives of computers, compact discs, flash drives and removable discs. Although we trust our hardware to keep the information safe for retrieval anytime we want, there are occasions when they are lost and we are left without a clue where to find them. Not always hardware or software is responsible for lost files. It is possible that we deleted the file accidentally.

The Simplest of File Recovery Techniques for Hard Disks

Retrieving deliberately deleted files are relatively easy. All that you will have to do is look into the recycle bin folder and restore them to where they originally belonged, straight and simple as that. But don’t forget, that often we empty the recycle bin itself, which means this technique will not work any longer. However, you can still lay your hands on lost files, though you must be a little knowledgeable about DOS (Disk Operating System).

Most operation within the computer takes place without even our knowing about it. What we consider as lost for good remains on hard disk for infinite time, which simply means they are recoverable. One of the common methods that computer users used before the advent of programs like Windows and Linux was to supply the last few letters of the file name preceded with ‘?’ and search for the file, and you will have recovered the file. Please note that this technique will not work if you format the disk. There is simply no way to recover lost files from them.

Recovering Files from Damaged Hard Disks

You computer’s hard disk where all your files are stored is a delicate device. Everything here is precision built and tolerance-limit is within a couple of hundred millionth of a millimeter. They are usually very sensitive to electrical voltage fluctuations, dust particles, humidity (read moisture) and high temperatures. Ideally, computers must be stored in a cool dry ventilated place. That however never is the scenario. Hard disks break down either due to aging or mechanical failure. Aging is foreseeable, and data can be transferred to another storage disk but mechanical failure is unpredictable, though they show symptoms at onset.
Opening hard disks and reconstructing the device for total recovery is the last technique one may want to attempt. Most often, that is not feasible even at workshop level. The only option available therefore is to leave it in the hands of specialists, preferably the manufacturer. What the manufacturer will actually do is open the hermetically sealed hard disk and reconstruct a new hard disk by copying the data from the disk platters. The procedure is expensive and may be several times the price of a new better hard disk itself.
Reconstructing your hard disk in the manufacturer’s factory is not fail proof either. It presumes that your hard disk platter or the read head has been damaged. If the platters are burnt or broken, recovering data is a matter of chance. Before you send your hard disk to the factory, make a fair assessment of the cost to the worth of your data contained. Results are seldom guaranteed, because there are too many unpredictable variables to recovery.

File Recovery Using Software

Most file recovery software work on the same principles that are deployed for manual recovery. The only difference being they do it faster and meticulously. You can run them as many times as you want and consider using many different options. In short they save you time. Though, often, your recovery software may be capable of defragmenting your hard disk, it is better you do it as maintenance routine. The main advantage to you is your computer will run faster.
Here are two popular files recovery software you can consider using.

Recuva:

Recuva is one of the best known file recovery software. It is free and simple to use. At the most basic level you can use it for recovering files you deleted deliberately as well as accidentally. Besides hard disks, Recuva can be used on iPod, flash drives, and external hard disk, and memory cards as well. Primarily it is intended for use on 32-bit systems, but there is also another version for the 64-bit Windows. You can download a free copy from http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds .

Glary Undelete:

What makes Glary preferred software for recovering lost files is its user-friendly interface. Most users like it because it will show up a list of files recoverable and folders view like Explorer with which most of us are familiar. The only irritant is it has to be downloaded and installed on your computer. The other irritant is it will ask you to install a bar on your browser, but you can decline.

Attach Cloud Files Into Gmail (On The Fly) With Cloudy

7:42:00 pm |

Are you tired of downloading a file from your cloud storage to your hard drive, just so you couldattach it in Gmail to send to someone? Wouldn’t it be easier if you could just click ‘Attach File’ and select any file from any cloud storage you own on the Web?
We’ll show you how you can attach files in Gmail straight from cloud storage with a handy Chrome extension called Cloudy.
Cloudy
Cloudy is a Chrome extension which overrides the Gmail default system for attaching files. Instead of getting the usual file selection when you click ‘Attach files’, users will be presented with aFilepicker.io window with a list of cloud storage sources.

Integrating Gmail With Cloudy

To start using Cloudy, add it to your Chrome browser. It will ask for your permission to access your data on Gmail.
Log in your Gmail account and compose a new message.
This extension works with both old and new compose. To attach an attachment from cloud storage or other sources, click on the ‘cloud’ icon.
You will see an interface to choose the sources you want to select your attachment from. For this guide, we will be using Dropbox as an example.
Choose Dropbox and click on Connect to Dropbox.
The app will ask for your permission to connect Filepicker.io with your Dropbox account. You will only need to give permission once.
You will be taken back to your Gmail page and you’ll notice that now you can view all your Dropbox files. Choose which file you want to attach and click ‘Upload’.
The program first downloads the file…
… before uploading the file as your attachment.
Once the upload is complete, you can continue composing your email as normal.
To obtain files from the other cloud storage, just repeat the steps above and select the new cloud storage instead of Dropbox.

Room For Improvement

There are a few downsides of Cloudy: it has yet to recognize SkyDrive as a cloud storage, you can’t really attach more than one attachment at one go and it doesn’t work if the default language of your Gmail isn’t in English.
Apart from that, if you need to email files from your cloud storage a lot, Cloudy is a handy tool to have on your browser.

How To Find And Sort Gmail Emails By File Size

3:00:00 pm |

When you reach the size limit of your email Inbox, common practice dictates that you delete some of your emails to clear some space for new incoming email so they won’t be blocked and returned to the sender. It can be stressful especially when these new emails are of extreme importance.
Find Big Mail on GMail
This is avoidable if you can do a quick scan of your Inbox and delete or remove large emails particularly those with large attachments. The problem is, Gmail does not provide such tools.
In this entry, we will guide you to solve this problem with the help of Find Big Mail (FBM), a web application. FBM will identify the size of your emails, and sort them with labels directly in your Inbox so you can easily delete or move your big emails elsewhere to produce much-needed space, quickly and for free.

1. Insert Username

Lets start this tutorial by visiting FindBigMail.com. Here, you need to type in your personal Gmail or Google Apps account username in the text box and click on that big orange button that says ‘Find Big Mail’.
Find Big Mail

2. Grant Access

Of course your account is private, and since only you can access your email, you need to give permission, which you can revoke anytime under your ‘My Account’ settings, to Find Big Mail to access your data.
Find Big Mail Access

3. Now, Find Big Emails In Your Inbox

Now that you have completed the process, all you have to do is just wait for the search results — it takes between five and sixty minutes to sort everything out, depending on the size of your Inbox. In the event that the results do not appear, click on the ‘refresh’ button, just to get things moving.
Scan Find Big Mail
When the results are ready, the following pie chart will appear, tabulating the emails from your Inbox categorized by size.
Find Big Mail Web Result
FBM will also send you an email containing a detailed report with links to specific larger emails, so you can focus your attention there. Check, delete or move these larger emails elsewhere to unclutter your Inbox. As you can see in the image below, on the left are the top 3 biggest message links to direct you to the specific emails.
Find Big Mail Inbox
Apart from the email report by FBM, you will also receive new labels created as shown in the first image of this tutorial. Now you can simply navigate using these labels to find specific emails by size.

Conclusion

You can use the service for free; not a single dime is charged unless if you need to check your Google Apps account. Using FBM with your personal Gmail account is definitely easy, but you may be concerned about the security of your personal email (it is like giving a stranger unlimited access to your email account).
However, as mentioned on the blog, two security sites, namely Norton Safe Web and McAfee SiteAdvisor have done separate independent scans on the FBM service application and confirmed that the site is safe for use according to their detailed checklists. So worry no more and start clearing out the mess.
